    President's Message

    Caroline Bacher

    Dear Members,

Happy belated Groundhog Day! Wiarton Willie says we will have an early Spring! We have had some beautiful sunny days of late. I hope that you are able to get outside and enjoy the crisp, fresh air whether it be for a walk, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing!

This month is an important one for all of our members of the Beaver Valley Probus Club because we will hold our AGM on February 23rd. This will not be the usual AGM meeting where everyone can gather to enjoy a lunch together. The actual meeting will be run using Zoom. However, the review of last year’s minutes, the slate of nominees for officers and the financial statements will be done online. Please refer to the email sent out on January 27th for more information about the voting process. Further emails are forthcoming.

Every February AGM meeting brings change to the Management Committee. Although a few of us are willing to stay on for another term, some of our members are stepping down. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their important contributions to our Management team over the past few years. They are Vicki and Terry Kellar, Rick Leclair, Ann Parsons, Chris Rickard and Nancy Seppala.

That means there are still some positions open! Please consider volunteering. We are here to give you assistance. Please see the nominating committee report further down in this newsletter.

This month is special because St. Valentine’s Day is on February 14th. This is a  good time to send greetings to friends and relatives. Remember to be kind to one another. Stay safe. We hope that you will join us for our monthly virtual Meetings with interesting speakers!

    Sincerely,
    Caroline Bacher

    Our Speaker on February 23

We will begin with the  Annual General Meeting (AGM) agenda, and announce the results of the voting for the 2021 slate of officers. This will be immediately followed by a presentation by our guest speaker. Please check your emails closer to the meeting date, for the link to join the Zoom meeting.

Beaver Valley Probus Club 20th Anniversary

Last month we announced that our Beaver Valley Probus Club is celebrating our 20th Anniversary during the year 2021. To date, our Committee has held 2 zoom meetings to start the planning process. Our aim is to feature as many of our Founding Members from 2001 with a short bio & photo in our Grapevine newsletter throughout 2021. Last month we featured 3 members and this month we again include some more of our members that joined our Club in 2001, along with a short write-up from 2 of our Past Presidents from 2002 and 2003.

We would welcome your ideas on how we can celebrate this special milestone in 2021 and ask you to contact any of the 4 members listed below with your suggestions.

    In the Beginning....

    Jim O'Brien, President 2003

In 1995 when Wilma and I retired to our weekend place in Thornbury, there was just one Probus Club in the whole area. It was in Collingwood, just for men, and had a ten year waiting list. With the help of Rotary, 25 people from that waiting list formed the Blue Mountain Probus Club, also in Collingwood and also just for men. By 1999, it had a waiting list, and there were also Probus Clubs for women, and Probus Clubs for men and women - all in Collingwood.

Jim Hamilton, a Past President of the Blue Mountain Probus Club, asked the Thornbury/Clarksburg Rotary Club to sponsor a Probus Club in Thornbury. A notice was placed in the local newspaper explaining what Probus was all about and inviting people to come to a meeting at the Beaver Valley Community Centre to help us decide if a new club should just be for men or women or both.

We had 75 chairs set out, but 180 people showed up. Jim Hamilton, with his strong high school principal's voice, chaired the meeting. At the end, by a strong show of hands, it was decided to have a combined men and women's Probus Club. Our first president (Peter Jerred), as well as a secretary and treasurer were appointed, and a date for the first meeting of the new club was set.

    The Early Years

    Jim Hamilton, President 2002

Since Jim O’Brien covered how the club started, I will talk about the early years. I was the second president and one of the founding fathers. From the start, we had great executives. Like other clubs we did not have strict limits on numbers. Our area was growing fast with retired people. With the help of many individuals a large number of "interest clubs" were started,  and with a little help from the executive, ran independently. There was an annual fair to showcase and sign-up members. During my time many joined Probus to get into a club. I have many fond memories of my time at Beaver Valley Probus.

    Our Founding Members

Each month we will feature some of our founding members. If you are one of original members that joined the club in 2001 - we would like to hear from you! Please contact Hank Bouwman.

This month we feature Jim O'Brien, Peter & Sue Boehm and John and Carol Hethrington. Please click here to access their photo and bio! (Members-only) you must login to view!

    Snowshoeing

    Caroline Bacher

Snowshoeing has resumed again! We had our first session out at Tomahawk Golf Course on January 27th. It was a very snowy day so the track was in good condition. We did two circuits, since it is a fairly small course. Fun was had by all! Session 2 was on February 3rd at the Clendenan Dam Conservation Area. It was a beautiful sunny day! See the the Snowshoeing Slideshow for photos.

    Computer Group

    Martin Buscher

The computer group resumed their online meetings in January with a discussion about Social Media - the good stuff and the pitfalls. There was a short demonstration of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, messaging apps and more. The group tackled how to search and use hashtags, and discovered how much private data these tools actually collect about us! The next meeting is February 24 @2:00.

    Management Committee Openings

We urgently need to fill two openings on our Management Committee for 2021. There is a lot of support and handover help available - how about giving it a try?

Please contact Marion Stewart, Martin Buscher, or Sandra Whitehead for details.

    Martin Buscher

You may have received phone calls or email from scammers, so you may have wondered how they found your phone number or email address. Did it come from Probus?

When we moved to the new website last year, we also made our member directory available online. To use this online directory, you have to be an active member of our Probus club and you need to login to your account first. You are in control over the type of information you want to share with other members. You can even opt out of the directory altogether, although that would make it difficult for other members to get in touch with you.

When you pay for membership or events using the online payment system, you have the choice to store your card's information for future use. It is a good practice not to do this for any online payment.

So, did they get my phone number from Probus? Very unlikely, but even government agencies and credit reporting companies can be compromised. Is an online directory as safe as the old printed version? That is as hard to know as the whereabouts of the 600 printed copies that were produced every year before we moved online.

    How did we get here?

    President's Message

    Caroline Bacher

    Dear Members,

Happy New Year! While we get used to printing 2021,  we are all looking forward to a better year ahead. The COVID-19 vaccines are on their way to give us hope.

We are very excited that 2021 is our 20th Anniversary year! You can read the article from our 20th Anniversary Committee further down in this newsletter. The committee is already pursuing a few ideas and would really welcome suggestions from all of our members regarding ways that we can celebrate this important milestone throughout the year!

Your Probus club made the change to Virtual Meetings to adhere to the provincial and town regulations and will continue meeting through Zoom, until it is safe to meet in-person again. The Beaver Valley Probus Club was among some of the very first clubs to use Zoom to hold meetings, and our technical team is now assisting other Probus Clubs in the country to do the same.

In February, we will hold our AGM. You will be receiving an email regarding the new way of presenting our reports. Even though the majority of the management team members are remaining in their posts for another term, some have decided to step down as they have been doing their jobs for over three years now. It is time to let someone new step in. There are still a few positions open. We do need new members to join the team to assist us, even though we are meeting virtually. Please see the Nominating Committee’s announcement in this newsletter.

We are all looking forward to the day when we can meet in-person again to enjoy the many activities that Probus offers. Until then, stay safe and enjoy the great outdoors!

    Sincerely,
    Caroline Bacher

    Membership Renewal

    Vicki and Terry Kellar

    Renewal Deadline: January 14

Our membership drive for 2021 is quickly drawing to a close. The management team is very pleased that almost 95% of our members have renewed already, however there are still a number of you that we have yet to hear from. If you have any questions or need log-in help, please contact one of our renewal team members listed below. They can even take your credit card information over the phone and complete your renewal on the spot.

In 2020, we have tried to accommodate the restrictions presented by the Covid virus by moving to virtual meetings which include guest speakers each month. Our activities that follow provincial guidelines are continuing. We have updated our website which allows us to process secure, no-contact, online renewal payments. And finally, we also reduced the renewal fee by 50%.

To renew, click the Renew your membership button below to log in. Have your password and credit card handy! (If you have forgotten your password, click here.)

If you are not renewing, we ask that you also please let us know via email at bvpcmembership@gmail.com

Although we are not meeting in-person at the Community Center in January due to COVID-19, Carolynn and Sylvia Wilson, will give their presentation online.

Please check your emails in January a couple of days before the meeting date, for the link to join our Zoom meeting. (Pre-registration is not required).

Sylvia and Carolynn's family represent seven generations and reside in Collingwood. They along with other descendants promote cultural awareness and inclusivity. Their forefathers purchased property in Collingwood, erected a church and established several Black settlements in our area. This past year in 2020 they celebrated the 150th Anniversary of their church.  Their objectives are to preserve and recognize the importance of Canadian Black history.

Beaver Valley Probus Club 20th Anniversary 2001-2021

The year 2020 was very challenging for a lot of people and there wasn’t much in the way of good news. Well, that is about to change in 2021, as the BEAVER VALLEY PROBUS CLUB will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary and would like to celebrate this milestone throughout 2021.

We have established a 20-year Anniversary Committee to kick-off this special event and they commenced meeting in December to start the planning process. One of our goals is to recognize many of the 75 active founding members that helped start our club in 2001. We are in the process of contacting those members to request a short bio and photograph that we will feature in our monthly newsletters and on our website.

We would welcome your ideas on how we can celebrate this special milestone in 2021 and ask you to contact any of the 4 members listed below with any suggestions!

    Hank Bouwman, Committee Chair.

    Our Founding Members

At this time when we are preparing to celebrate our twentieth anniversary, it is fitting to acknowledge the contribution of our founding members, whose energy and enthusiasm resulted in the formation of the Beaver Valley Probus Club.

Each month we will feature several of our founding members. The anniversary committee is in the process of trying to contact all of our current founding members, but it turns out our membership database records are not perfect. If you are one of original members that joined the club in 2001 - we want to hear from you! Please contact Hank Bouwman, Anniversary Committee Chair, to submit your bio.

This month we feature Perry Hoadley, Herbert Quickert and John Dick.

Our walks will resume when the lockdown is lifted. Please check the Winter Walkers Activity webpage to see the latest photos in our slideshow, and the date of the upcoming walks when they resume.

    Ski Legends

    Hiking

    Cynthia Sampson

People have been inquiring about the Probus Hiking Group. Our outings came to an abrupt halt last spring, but it’s now a New Year and time to start looking forward to the new hiking season. It really won’t be all that long until spring is upon us again and our group can reconnect and get back out onto our beautiful local trails. Further details to come later.

    Fun with words

    Shared by Bob Hann

An email was going around recently referencing the "Washington Post's Mensa Invitational", which apparently invites readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supplying a new definition.

Here are some extracts from the winners:

    1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.
    2. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.
    3. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
    4. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
    5. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

Below are some entries, where readers were asked to supply alternate meanings for common words.

    1. Coffee, n. The person upon whom one coughs.
    2. Flabbergasted, adj. Appalled by discovering how much weight one has gained.
    3. Abdicate, v. To give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
    4. Esplanade, v. To attempt an explanation while drunk.
    5. Negligent, adj. Absentmindedly answering the door when wearing only a nightgown.

    President's Message
    Caroline Bacher

    Dear Members,

The beautiful Fall colours no longer brighten our days. The month of November may keep some of us indoors and hopefully you have a good hobby to keep you busy during this time between seasons. I personally like to get dressed warmly and go out for a walk, no matter what the weather brings.

Though we have not been able to hold in-person meetings our Management Committee has been very busy working behind the scenes to keep you connected.  The monthly meetings feature a Virtual Speaker Presentation. We have upgraded our Zoom license in order to allow more participants to take part in these meetings.

We also keep in touch with our members via the Grapevine. This newsletter contains information of interest to all.  Submissions for our Grapevine from members are encouraged. In this issue there is some important information about Membership Renewal and Management Committee Openings.

Our website is there for your enjoyment and up-to-date information. Please check it regularly to find out what new photos or recipes have been submitted, see what Activities are listed and to view the Master Gardener’s tips and much more.

During this resurgence of COVID many of us could not celebrate Thanksgiving with our families. Christmas is coming and we are uncertain about how we will be able to gather. Unfortunately, our Annual Christmas Luncheon has been cancelled this year.

The situation in which we find ourselves seems like it is going to be with us for much longer than we anticipated. However, we can still connect with friends and family in different ways. We are certainly learning how to use the technology available to us whether it be Zoom, Facebook or Skype. We can still get outside and go for a walk with a friend or two. We can get together with friends who are in our “bubble”. With the snow coming, we can look forward to our winter activities such as snowshoeing and skiing.

In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Holiday Season. Until we can meet again, ”Keep Calm and Carry On”.

    New Easy Membership Renewal
    Vicki and Terry Kellar

Along with all the new options available on our BVPC web site we can soon proceed with On Line renewals and payments. This new process will make Membership renewals and payments as easy as a few clicks on your own profile and avoid the waste of paper and need for intensive handling of forms and personal cheques by our volunteers.

When you receive the renewal email on December 1st, please click on the renewal button. You will be prompted to login and then be guided through the secure payment process. If you have never logged in before, a password will also be included in the email.

With the issues related to Covid our renewal fee, as noted in last month’s newsletter, has been reduced by 50% to only $15 each. While reducing our cash flow this amount will allow us to continue to operate and to reopen for meetings and activities when permissible.

Secure credit card payments will be made by you, with no record kept by BVPC of your confidential information.

Stay tuned for an email on December 1st and please complete the renewal at that time. Reminder: This is a cheque-free process. A Help Team will be available at that time if you have any questions.

    Lifetime Membership Award

The Beaver Valley Probus Club Management Team awarded Lifetime Membership to Vicki and Terry Kellar during the October monthly meeting held online. After 10 years on the Management Committee, 7 as Membership Chairs, and with Vicki also serving 3 years as VP, President, and Past-President, and Terry as Technical Advisor, the Kellars have contributed tremendously to the success of our Club.

They have organized an annual outing to the King's Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene, and previously to DanCap Productions in North York. Vicki and Terry were also enthusiastic members of the hiking group, often acting as leaders. This photo was taken recently for their 48th Anniversary. Congratulations to the Kellars!

    Our Speaker on November 24

    Linda Murphy
    Hiking Home for Shelter

Although our regular, in-person meeting at the Community Center is cancelled in November due to COVID-19, Linda Murphy will give her presentation online.

You no longer have to register to join! We will send the Zoom link to all our members a couple of days before the meeting, as we now have a license for up to 200 households! (For help on how to use Zoom click here!)

The cycle of domestic abuse must be broken. Linda Murphy believed she could make a start at doing so through her backpacking and fundraising expedition: “Hiking Home for Shelter”. In 2019, Linda spent 6 months back-packing over 3,000km, through the wild and rugged mountainous terrain of the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada.

Completely solo for most of her journey, 58-year-old Linda ventured on this profoundly challenging trek, surviving illness, injury, and loneliness, in order to raise funds for our local shelter, My Friend’s House, and national domestic violence-prevention education programs. To date, Linda’s single-handed fundraising campaign has raised OVER $32,000!

After raising three girls, Linda, and her husband of 30 years, Gord Llewellyn, moved to Nottawa from Unionville, in 2013. Linda’s career path has continuously led her towards positions of education, motivation, and leadership. She started as a high school drama teacher in the 80’s, became a corporate communication coach in the 90’s, and since 2003, an award-winning realtor, with Royal LePage.

Linda has enjoyed volunteering with Southern Georgian Bay Association of Realtors, Trinity United Church, Collingwood G & M Hospital, Craigleith Ski Club Race Crew, and Theatre Collingwood. She looks forward every year to the Fall, when she usually plays a leading role in The Gaslight Community Theatre Tour, but her greatest love is outdoor adventures, and especially, long-distance hiking!

    Activity Groups Update

    Winter Walkers
    Nancy Dixon

The Winter Walkers group had their first walk on Wednesday, November 4th. It was a beautiful day and the highlight was seeing some alpacas. It was an enjoyable outing and we would really welcome more members joining us.

The Winter Walkers is a newly formed group, that meets every week for a relaxing stroll through a neighbourhood in Thornbury, Meaford or the Collingwood area. The walking is easy, and we are encouraging photographs for posting on our website. The plan is to meet now on Monday mornings at 9:30 for approximately an hour walk. Next week we meet in Collingwood.

Please register for the Winter Walkers Activity Group if you are interested in joining any of sessions, or contact Nancy.  Notices will be sent out via email the week before, with the meeting point and additional sign-up instructions. Remembering Mom's Clothesline:
    Shared by Pat Wright

This is fun to read and quite true. We "oldies" are probably the last generation that will remember what a clothesline was. And in lots of places they are now illegal (because some suburban communities consider them “unsightly”!). It's the poem at the end that's the best!!!

    THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
    1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.
    2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands.
    3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes. Walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
    4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
    5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders – always by the tail! What would the neighbours think?
    6. Wash day was Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, especially on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!
    7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, you know!)
    8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry"
    9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were seen as "tacky".
    10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.
    11. Clothes off of the line and neatly folded in the clothes basket before supper time, and ready to be ironed ... IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!
    12. Long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.

    And now a POEM...

A clothesline was a news forecast
    To neighbours passing by,
There were no secrets you could keep,
When clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link, for neighbours always knew,
If company had stopped on by to spend a night or two.
    For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", and towels upon the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths" with intricate designs.

The line announced a baby's birth,
    From folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes were hung,
    So carefully with pride!

The ages of the children could,
    So readily be known,
By watching how the sizes changed,
You’d know how much they'd grown!

It also told when illness struck,
    As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe too,
    Haphazardly were strung.

It also said, "On vacation now",
When lines hung limp and bare
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged,
With not an inch to spare!

New folks in town were scorned upon,
If wash was dingy and gray,
As neighbours carefully raised their brows,
    And looked the other way.

But clotheslines now are of the past,
For dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home
    Is anybody's guess!

I really miss that way of life,
    It was a friendly sign,
When neighbours knew each other best

By what hung on the line.

    President's Message
    Caroline Bacher

Dear Members, Thank you for responding to our recent survey. The Management Committee will consider your comments in planning for the future of our club.

If you have been listening to and watching the news lately, you will be aware of the rising number of cases of COVID-19, not only in our province, but in other provinces too. Canada is not alone in experiencing a resurgence of this virus, as is being seen all over the world. We need to be ready for a second wave. Our premier, Doug Ford, has just placed more restrictions on gatherings both outside and inside. It is just not possible for our club to gather in person yet. If you have not yet downloaded the app, COVID alert, to your phone, you might consider doing so. There seems to be positive feedback for this app from those who have it.

Fortunately, we can have our monthly meetings via Zoom, featuring our interesting speakers. We encourage you to participate in these meetings. There is a Q & A part where you can ask questions to the Speaker. Then afterward, we have a “Chat Room” where you can have a conversation with other members of our club, just as if we were having coffee time at the Community Centre. If you are wary of accessing Zoom, please see the link in our recent Survey Results email. You can also partner with a close friend to watch our next meeting. Please join us in October!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers in the Beaver Valley Probus Club. Without them, we would not have newsletters, meetings, or activities.

Some of our activities are continuing virtually, such as Book Clubs, Euchre and the Computer Group. Other leaders who wish to resume their activity must submit a plan to a sub-committee before they can go ahead. Their protocols must follow the Provincial Health Regulations to keep their participants safe. Activity Coordinators must feel comfortable with the protocols, in order to restart their activity. We respect their wishes.

The UK’s National Council for Voluntary Organisations states: “People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge.” If you feel a need to do something, please consider volunteering.

We need more submissions for our newsletter. We plan to include a humour section and a recipe corner. If you have contributions for these, or any other ideas for content, please contact our newsletter editor, Chris Rickard. You could also submit photographs to Heather Buscher for our website.

Please read the Submission from our Nominating Committee in this newsletter.

In closing, though we may not be able to gather with our family due to COVID restrictions, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for, living here in this most beautiful part of Ontario.

    Survey Results

Your Management Committee (MC) would like to thank all 198 members who responded to a survey about our operations during the pandemic. A synopsis of the responses is available here. Based on the survey results, the MC has taken the following steps:
    • There will be no meetings at our Community Centre for the remainder of this membership year. Instead, these meetings will be conducted online and recorded using Zoom. We have had 3 such online meetings to-date and found them to be quite educational, so please join the next ones, if you can.
    • The membership renewal fee for 2021 will be $15 per member, which is a 50% reduction. At this level and with the anticipated number of renewing members, we expect a significant reduction in cash assets while leaving sufficient funds to potentially conduct a regular year of operations. More information about the renewal process will be sent out in early November.
    • Many of our members have expressed an interest in outdoor activities. However even prior to the pandemic, we had no leaders for some of our outdoor activities (see Activities Update article). The MC also respects the wishes of the activity leaders who are not comfortable with leading their group under the current conditions. Should you wish to serve in a leadership role, kindly contact our Activities Convenors, Rick Leclair and Colleen Wilson-Dick.

    Activity Groups Update
    Rick Leclair & Colleen Wilson-Dick

    Activity Coordinators Still Needed

COVID 19 continues to throw us those “curve balls”, which makes it pretty difficult to get back in the game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be ready for the first opportunity when it presents itself, AND it is safe to do so. Some outdoor activities could possibly resume in the future with appropriate safeguards, following provincial and local health officials’ guidelines and restrictions.

Unfortunately, some of our outdoor activity groups with high member interest, remain without coordinators. Activities including Canoeing/Kayaking, Digital Photography, Birding and Snowshoeing, need volunteers to assist with a restart when the time is right.

We are encouraging people to consider sharing an Activity Coordinator role. Some of the tasks that could be shared by an “Activity Coordinator Team” are: planning outings, choosing locations/routes, communicating with participants, and coordinating outing leaders. There are roles for members new to the activity, as well for those that have some experience already.

Ultimately organizers of activity groups must be comfortable with resuming an activity before it happens. If you are interested in finding out more about this opportunity, or would like to take on the role of coordinator, or assist, please contact Activities Co-Convenors Rick Leclair or Colleen Wilson-Dick.

    Winter Walkers
    Nancy Dixon

The Winter Walkers group is a newly formed group, that will meet every week for a relaxing stroll through a neighbourhood in Thornbury, Meaford or the Collingwood area. The walking is easy, and we are encouraging photographs for posting on our website. The plan is to meet Tuesdays @ 1:30 pm for approximately an hour walk, from November to March (with a break in December). The day of the week may switch to Thursdays depending on the weather.

The number of participants on each walk will be limited and other COVID-19 restrictions will apply.

Please register for the activity if you are interested in joining. Notices will be sent out via email the week before, with walking route and additional sign-up instructions. For more information see the Winter Walkers Activity webpage.

    Georgian Probus Travel Group
    Gloria Thompson

With any luck, we can redo Scotland in May 2021 and Croatia in the fall of 2021. This all depends on a vaccine. Seniors are at risk and there can be no compromises. We have to be flexible – Scotland and Croatia will be shifted according to the winds of COVID.

If you are still interested in the Croatia trip that is a combination of a yacht/bike week and a land tour week, please contact Jacqui at 647-404-9380 and have her add your name to the list for the fall of 2021. Hopefully, we will be able to offer Madeira and Portugal later.

Best to all on behalf of the GPTG

    Paddleboarding
    Ilene Charland

The season was short, but fun. A few Probus members met weekly from late July until early September on their paddle boards. Being a small group, we could easily maintain social distance as we paddled along the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay. Sometimes the water was calm and almost glassy, other days we were thrilled by small waves. See the Paddleboarding Slideshow for photos.

Thanks to all who participated. See you next season!

    Nordic Pole Walking
    Nancy Hart

The pole walking group usually has its final walk around the end of October, which will not be happening this year. Unfortunately, this year we didn’t even have our first walk of the season let alone anything in between. When the weather is fine, pole walking  is a great way to get outside, take in the fresh air, get some exercise and enjoy the fall colours. It is also very good for your mental health!

Later, when the snow flies, use your poles when you are snowshoeing or just out for a walk in the snow. Remove the rubber booties from the end of the poles and attach the snow baskets. Snow baskets for the Poles 4 Life brand of poles can be purchased from the Thornbury Pharma Save. Probus members get a 20% discount.

Hopefully next spring we will be able to meet again.

    President's Message
    Caroline Bacher

I hope that you have all had an enjoyable summer. The weather has certainly been in our favour for outdoor activities!

These are still very uncertain times due to COVID-19. We are not yet able to meet as a group in person which is very unfortunate for our club. However, we are continuing to reach out to our members via e-mails, the Grapevine, and our website. Additionally, we offer our "meetings" on-line with our virtual speakers, thanks to the work of our Speaker Chair, Ann Parsons and our Zoom Coordinator, Martin Buscher.

Throughout the summer Nancy Dixon and Heather Buscher hosted a photo contest. Locations of interest were photographed and members could guess where the photo was taken. I would like to thank Nancy and Heather for their initiative in providing everyone with a fun activity! The winners are announced in this edition of the Grapevine.

If you have been creative or have tried a new venture this summer, we would like to hear from you. It could be anything from crafts, recipes, a hike, or an interesting photo. Provide a photograph and brief description of your activity to our Web Coordinator, Heather Buscher, and it will be placed on our website www.beavervalleyprobus.com.

The Management Committee continues to meet via Zoom. Don't forget to register for our next meeting on Tuesday, September 22 to listen to our Speaker, Dr. Robert Galway!

Stay safe by wearing your mask, staying 2 metres (6 feet) away from others and washing your hands. These are just a few of the Ontario Health guidelines which we should all be following.

The changing of seasons brings us cooler weather and some nice days ahead!

    Dr. Robert Galway
"Comparing the Pandemic of 1918 to Covid19"

Although our regular in-person, meeting at the Community Center is cancelled in September due to COVID-19, Dr. Galway will give his presentation online (Zoom).

For security reasons, we ask that you login to the BVPC website and Register before September 20 and you will be sent a link to the webcast with simple instructions on how to join a few days before. Although we are limited to 100 spots, a waitlist will be available and offer spots that become open. You can also register now and cancel your registration on or before September 20 if your plans change. Only one member in the household needs to register, if you are sharing the same computer screen or tablet!

Robert Galway was born in Kenora, Ont. and grew up in the Red Lake area. In those days the community had no road connection with the outside world and planes outnumbered cars by10:1. During High School, he would load freight for the local Trapping and Commercial Fishing Operators at the Green Airways Base in exchange for flying in the right seat of George Green's first Stinson Reliant CF-BGN.

In 1958, he graduated from U of T with a B.A. after studying Economics and Geology. This was financed by working in mining exploration carrying out Geophysical assignments throughout Ontario, Quebec and Labrador.

With a lull in the mining game, Robert returned to Medical School graduating in 1963.
Following further training at U of T and McGill, he completed specialization receiving a FRCS(C) degree in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Royal College in 1970.

During the first two decades of practice he shared ownership in a Cessna Skylane, CF-ZBB. He flew it and a Cessna Centurion 210, CF-YCP, conducting medical clinics throughout Northern Ontario, including in the towns of Timmins, Kapuskasing, and Moose Factory. Robert retired after 30 years of practice and returned to aviation not as a pilot but as an aviation historian.

Under normal circumstances we would be enjoying our Annual Picnic outdoors on July 7th!

We would be sitting under a tree or a canopy visiting with friends and chatting with new people. We would perhaps try our hand at games such as, “Corn in the Hole” or “Chipping and Putting”, which were introduced last year. However, the real draw would be Bocce, the most popular activity at the picnic since 2003. You can read about the History of the game of Bocce with the Beaver Valley Probus Club in this newsletter. It is interesting how this game has progressed throughout the years.

The weather has certainly been glorious this week. Summer has finally arrived! I hope that you enjoy some time with your circle of friends and family this summer whether it be having picnics, suppers outside on your patio or walks in the park.

Your Management Committee has been meeting regularly every month since March by Zoom. We will keep you posted on any new developments that may occur over the months of July and August. In the meantime, take good care of yourself and others. Please continue to adhere to the Social Distancing and Hygiene guidelines provided by our Provincial Health Authorities to keep us safe.

We are still updating the website regularly. Please continue to submit your photos and ideas of how to keep busy. We are looking for pet photos, recipes, internet memes and videos too! Email your submissions to beavervalleyprobus@gmail.com or Heather Buscher.

    Field Bocce Tournament History

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the Beaver Valley Probus Club unfortunately had to cancel the annual Summer Picnic and Bocce Tournament in July.

The Bocce Tournament really is an important part of our Club history. It was introduced at the Picnic in 2003, by Jim and Sandi Hamilton and has been an annual competition ever since.

And now, Ken Kelley, who has done an amazing job for the last 10 years organizing the Bocce Tournament, needs to pass on the torch for 2021.

If any players are willing to step up to organize for next year, please let Ken know. He is happy to help with the transition, and we certainly have lots of time to plan at the moment!

We would like to thank Ken for all his time and effort that he put in to make Bocce happen over the years,  so that Probus members - both participants and spectators - could enjoy the tournament.

Our Bocce - a Game of Skill?

We play field Bocce, where 16 teams compete and the variables are infinite. In spite of this we have had a number of repeat winners with various partners.

    • Peter & Susan Boehm - 2003, 2015
    • Nancy & Guy Harris - Doreen & Murray Lamont - 2005, 2006, 2008
    • Terry & Merle White - 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017
    • Sharyl & George Peterson - 2013, 2018, 2019
    • Lou & Ward Fowler - 2018, 2019

    Memorable Moments

Ken has many wonderful memories of the Bocce tournaments, but the one tournament that stands out in particular, is the summer of 2011.

"On game day we often have teams who are short players and spectators are recruited to fill in. In 2011 none of Craig Wright’s team were available and three spectators volunteered.

And the 2011Champions were - Craig Wright, Cathy Seidel, Tom Patterson and Peter Roberts!

Variable conditions and often various partners have proven the skill of multiple Bocce Champions, but on a given day any one of the 16 teams can be a Bocce Champion!"

You can read more details about the history of this event, see our wonderful referees, and the complete list of Champions back to 2003 on our Picnic & Bocce Event webpage. You can also view the slideshows of the 2019 Tournament and 2018 Tournament.

    Making Sourdough:
Many members have taken up baking and a few have sent in their success stories. This video, sent in by Carol H, highlights something "a little different" in their sourdough bread attempt! Click on the image to view the video...

    Ragnar the Robot:
Most people have seen a Roomba in action to vacuum floors, but have you seen a robot cutting the lawn? Nancy and Paul D let Ragnar the Robot do all the work to mow their yard. Ragnar looks like a mini-corvette, is pollution free and charges itself for only a couple of loonies per month in electricity. Click on the image to view the video...

    The Only Way to Fly:
    (for right now anyway...)

Martin B has taken to building model airplanes and enjoying the great outdoors while flying them.(Most of the planes are actually 3D printed). Click on the image to view the video...

    President's Message
    Caroline Bacher

It is difficult to keep spirits up when we have experienced self-isolation and social distancing for almost three months now. However, we have to remember that “this too shall pass”.

On a personal note, Spring is one of my favourite seasons. I enjoy bird watching and spend much of my time in early Spring, before the leaves are fully out in the trees, identifying the many species that come through our yard. We always have a little House Wren who returns every year to the small birdhouse that I hang on the same tree for her. I have learned to identify a few different warblers and finches. There are many types of sparrows too!

Some of us who have gardens have been able to get outside to tend to them. It is hard work but the reward of seeing the beautiful flowers later is worth the effort. The trees are beginning to bud and there are blossoms on trees. We have so much to be thankful for even during these stressful times.

We are very fortunate to live in this beautiful area of the Blue Mountains. It has much to offer in the way of outdoor activities whether it be walking, hiking, cycling, driving on your motorcycle or in your car with the top down. Golf courses are open for those of you who enjoy golfing.

When you are at home there are many activities that you can do on your computer or I-pad. There are websites for card games and trivia games which are listed in this newsletter.

Keep your ideas coming! Submit your self-isolating photos and include your pet too! Send in recipes and ideas of how our members can keep busy. We all need to have something to lift our spirits!

Submit them to beavervalleyprobus@gmail.com or Heather Buscher. They will be posted on our website for all to enjoy.

In closing, I wish you all good health throughout the summer. I hope that we will be able to meet again in person. Until then, be kind to one another.

    My Covid-19 Story
    Seija Wolf

As you might know, we finally sold our house in January 2020, with an April 1st closing date. We were moving into a retirement home and could not take much with us. Our online auction to get rid of most of our belongings had to be cancelled. Getting help with the move was impossible, and the list of things we could not do goes on and on.

Well, April 1st came and we moved to Chartwell to find out that we were locked in. No visitors and not being able to go out has been quite a challenge. Anyway, we will survive. George has his music. He donated his organ to Chartwell, so it is here for him to enjoy. First two weeks it was locked up, but then a decision was made to let him play and enjoy.

I picked up crocheting again and have enjoyed having my fingers busy. Basically I have made just little doilies etc. and I will use them as Christmas presents later (if we ever get out of here). My daughter Julie, who is also an avid crocheter belongs to a Crochet Group on Facebook and she posted a picture of my doilies on the group’s Facebook page. As of today I have had 2098 likes. Can you believe that?

So whatever the situation, don’t let it get you down, be innovative and use you time wisely. And be safe.

Our Speaker on June 23 - Online only

Tim Burrows - Electric Vehicle Society
"Should Your Next Car Be Electric?"

Although our regular in-person, meeting at the Community Center is cancelled in June due to COVID-19, Tim Burrows our scheduled speaker, will give his presentation online.

Tim Burrows is a retired Vice President of Forty Creek Distillery and a graduate of the University of Toronto where he earned an honours degree in psychology. He has owned and driven battery-electric cars for the past 7 years and has logged over 250,000 kilometres without the need for gasoline or diesel fuel.

Tim chairs the Mississauga Chapter of the Electric Vehicle Society, a nonprofit organization which works to promote the understanding and adoption of electric mobility in Canada.

He now enjoys sharing his EV experience with others and breaks down many myths and misconceptions about electric vehicle ownership. Tim makes the case that we are nearing the ‘tipping point’ when electric cars will replace those powered by gasoline. He also touches on the state of self driving technology and what autonomous cars could mean for the future.

For security reasons, we ask that you login to the BVPC website and Register before June 22, and you will be sent a link to the webcast with simple instructions on how to join a few days before. Although we are limited to 100 spots, a waitlist will be available and offer spots that become open. You can also register now and cancel your registration on or before June 21 if your plans change. Only one member in the household needs to register, if you are sharing the same computer screen or tablet!

    Need help with Zoom?

Many of our members are still figuring out how to use Zoom effectively, whether chatting with family or tuning into the Probus monthly speakers. Zoom menus are a little different for every device, so using it on your desktop computer is not exactly the same as on the ipad or iphone. Here is a checklist of what to get familiar with, before you attend a zoom meeting:

    • Does the Zoom software or app need to be installed?
    • Is the sound turned on? (Use the computer or internet audio)
    • Can you mute, and unmute yourself? (You should be muted unless you are actually speaking...)
    • Can you turn on and off your video? (You may not want others to see you snack during a zoom session!)
    • Do you know how to use the Chat function to ask a question?
    • Do you know how to set the view to see only the speaker, or to see all participants? You might need to use the Gallery view mode, or swipe screen left or right if you are on a tablet or smartphone.
If you want to check whether your Zoom is working,  Heather can create a short practice session with you, to make sure everything is up-and-running for your next Zoom meeting. Please give Heather a call to arrange a time!

    Activity Groups Update

    Recreational Cycling Group
    Caroline Bacher

Although we are not cycling together, Caroline Bacher sent a list of six "Recommended Biking Routes" to her group so that they could try them out with their partners or alone. She reiterated the importance of social distancing from other riders when cycling. Caroline also sent "Tips for Safety" when cycling. You can also view these on the Recreational Cycling Activity webpage.

Phishing is a word used when criminals try to make us do things that give them access to our computers or online accounts, targeting our identity or our money. Activity Coordinators Still Needed
    Rick Leclair
    Colleen Wilson-Dick

We had a fantastic response for activity registration that continued on through May.  However some of the activities had large numbers of registrants, but still have no one volunteering to lead the activities yet! It would really be a shame if these activities  could not continue! Currently the following activities are on hold until Activity Coordinators are found:

    • Canoeing & Kayaking
    • Digital Photography
    • Birding
    • Snowshoeing
We are encouraging people to consider sharing an Activity Coordinator role. Some of the tasks that could be shared by an “Activity Coordinator Team” are: planning outings, choosing locations/routes, communicating with participants, and coordinating outing leaders. There are roles for members new to the activity, as well for those that have some experience already. If you are willing to co-share an activity leader role, please give Rick or Colleen a call.

    Caroline Bacher

Research shows that random acts of kindness and sharing have a proven beneficial effect on our mental and physical health. During this time of isolation, we are unable to support each other and connect face-to-face as we normally do. As a substitute, many of you are embarking on new hobbies and challenges, whether it be breaking open a previously under-appreciated puzzle, learning a new language or skilled trade, or brushing up on your technological skills to stay in touch.

If you are interested in sharing your new-found skills or hobbies, please send a photo to our Web Coordinator, Heather Buscher (her address can be found in your pink directory or the directory on our website). Heather is putting together a slide show of member projects, which will be made available on our new website under the Latest Photos section on the right hand side. Click on the image to view.

Our Management Committee is working behind the scenes and trying to find new ways of connecting with members. If you have any questions or need assistance or support, please reach out to any of the following: Lynn Corrigan, Vicki and Terry Kellar, Heather Buscher, Hank Bouwman, Ann Parsons, Nancy Seppala and Caroline Bacher. We are here to help! You can find our contact info on the website directory or in your pink printed directory.

We have cancelled our in-person meetings in May and June. Other events have also been cancelled. Please go to our website www.beavervalleyprobus.com to view.

As always, please follow the guidelines of our health officials and stay safe until we meet again.

Erica Angus came to work as Executive Director for Theatre Collingwood in 2013.  The company had been producing shows in-house since 1984 but the Board of Directors was looking for a new direction and someone who could bring in outside talent. Erica brought with her to Collingwood a wealth of experience in the arts and culture sector.  She has worked with many of Canada's most talented performers.  Read her full bio here.

Each year at Theatre Collingwood Erica and her team present approximately 12 shows/events.  It is a heavy workload but one that is both challenging and exciting.  No year has been as challenging as 2020, and although it has been filled with  uncertainty, Erica feels it has also brought with it "gifts" which will strengthen the company's ability to Put More PLAY in Your Life!

Hiking is, of course, suspended until restrictions are eased.  Some time ago Dennis Knight provided me with a great list of hikes that he was/is willing to lead for us this summer, but many of them will not happen. Realistically, July is the earliest we can hope for, so the following are possible:

    • Friday, July 3:  Trout Hollow
    • Tuesday, July 7:  Bognor Marsh

Even if you are already on the previous mailing list for hiking, please register online. The deadline for the Activities eFair has been extended to May 31st.

    Colleen Wilson-Dick

The Beaver Valley Probus Club’s Activities “eFair” has been well received by members. Once you get the hang of logging into the website and navigating around, it’s really pretty easy. If you haven’t yet set up your password to access all the features of our website, please do. You can find an excellent instructional slideshow on how to login available from the Login Help on our main web page. To date we have close to 800 registrations when you tally up numbers for each activity group. Our dining, cycling, and hiking groups alone make up over 60% of the registrations so far!

There is still time to sign up for our great variety of activities! We have extended the eFair to May 31st, 2020 to give members every opportunity to register for the first time or add to your existing list of activities. When the green flag is waved and we are able to resume club activities our activity groups will hit the ground running!

    Activities

    Activity Coordinators Still Needed:

It would be a shame to have some of our popular activities not continue! At present activities including, Canoeing & Kayaking, Digital Photography, Birding and Snowshoeing are on hold until Activity Coordinators are found for each group. Based on registrations so far this year there is a lot of interest in these groups. Unfortunately, they remain inactive until volunteers step up. If you are interested in finding out more about this opportunity or would like to take on the role of coordinator (or are willing to assist) please contact our Activities Co-convenors: Colleen Wilson-Dick or Rick Leclair

    Caroline Bacher

    "April showers bring May flowers"

This is a lovely quote for Spring, and it should lift up our hearts to know that Spring is coming amid all of this chaos.  Let’s hope that the flowers will bloom, the grass will get greener and the temperature will get warmer soon!  We have that to look forward to!

This is a very stressful time for all of us as we wait out this Pandemic of major proportions.  We are doing our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 by cancelling regular meetings and suspending small group activities for our Probus club.  Trips have also been cancelled until further notice.

It is also very difficult for us to be physically apart from our families at this time, especially with Easter approaching and other special events, like birthdays.  You have time now to work on hobbies and try new ones!

I hope that you can get outside for a walk and enjoy some of the sunny days. Soon we will be able to do some gardening as well.

We are here to help you. If you are in need of assistance, such as having   questions that are not health related, just chatting, or to pick up a few groceries or drugstore items, you may contact the following members who have generously volunteered to take your calls.

    • Lynn Corrigan, Support Group
    • Vicki and Terry Kellar, Membership
    • Heather Buscher, Website Coordinator
    • Hank Bouwman, Director at Large
    • Ann Parsons, Speaker Chair
    • Nancy Seppala, Co-Secretary
    • Caroline Bacher, President

Our contact information is in the Pink Directory or you may access the Directory on our new website:  beavervalleyprobus.com

For your information, I have compiled the phone numbers and websites of our local health authorities and hospitals as well as government websites below.

I believe that we are going to return to routines in different ways. Life is not going to be “as usual”.  We have all been affected by this Pandemic and will go forward in our own individual way.

I wish you and your families good health in the coming days.

    Ski Legends

Sadly, the ski season came to an early and abrupt end, as a result of the corona virus outbreak and measures to limit it. Better to be safe and healthy.

This past winter has been very successful in all respects and especially the “Ski Day Every Tuesday at Blue” was hugely popular.

The “Legends” management committee continues to work over the Spring, Summer and early Fall to plan for next year’s social events, days at the private clubs and ski trips. The trip to the Dolomites in Italy in January 2021 is sold out, and planning for the annual Sun Peaks trip will begin over the summer. Members will receive emails as information becomes available.

Please visit the web site, www.probusskilegends.ca

    Computer Corner

    Pa55w%rds!
Martin Buscher - IT Dude, Computer Group Leader & BVPC Vice-President

Last month at the AGM our scheduled speaker was unable to attend last minute. Martin Buscher, our Computer Group Leader stepped in.  Before migrating to the Beaver Valley and joining the BVPC, Martin had a career in the oil industry. Just prior to his retirement, he ran a program to improve his company's cyber-security defenses. This is where he learned much about the fight between people and their information machines, in particular on the topic of passwords.  In this presentation, Martin hopes to help his audience understand why things are the way they are, and how 3  simple rules can help fend off cyber-criminals.

Click here to see the presentation if you weren't able to attend or to refresh yourself if you did!

    In Memoriam

Peter White passed away in March.  He and his wife, Penny, who passed away in 2019, joined Beaver Valley Probus Club in 2006.

    Reflections

    And the People Stayed Home...

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

    The Master Gardener’s Corner

Things to do in your garden each month taken from the Ontario Master Gardener Calendar by John Hethrington, Past President, Master Gardeners of Ontario. For more information call 519-599-5846.

Please Note: The Paul Zammit presentation on Perennials has been postponed until Thursday, May 28 2020 at the Beaver Valley Community Centre at 7 PM. See you there!

    April 2020
    • Make sure you have done everything you were supposed to do on the March Master Gardner's List.
    • Do stretch and bend exercises before you start in the garden. I find skiing muscles have nothing to do with gardening muscles. Take it easy. There are a lot of gardening days before the ski season comes again.
    • I hope you had a chance to spread 19-19-19 general purpose fertilizer over the snow on all your flower beds and shrub borders before the snow disappeared. It melts down into the ground as the snow goes away. It and other fertilizers are available at the Co-Op in Markdale, at 10% discount for 599 Members. If you missed this step this year, plan for next winter and buy the fertilizer this fall.
    • The snow has gone but may be back once or twice in April. You can still spread the triple 19 as long as it does not get on to the emerging plants, as it may burn them.
    • Organize your compost pile for the new season. Start a new one with the top foot of compost from last year’s pile as a base.
    • As the weather warms and the ground dries, prune back perennials and ornamental grasses to 1” to 3” from the ground. Put dead material on your new compost pile. Shred if possible.
    • Prepare garden beds for planting. Dig in compost, and/or manure, and/or other organic material around each plant. Remove any weeds that have come through from last fall. When you have cleaned up the beds, ADD 3”TO 4” OF MULCH to control weeds this summer.
    • Remove rose protection. For Hybrid Teas, Prune to 6” or 8”and apply dormant oil spray before the buds break.
    • Apply dormant oil spray to shrubs like euonymus that may have suffered from scale last year. Do it before the buds break.
    • Prepare your vegetable garden with a good digging and mid-month plant the seeds of cool-weather vegetables like peas, spinach, lettuce, onions, beets and seeds of frost resistant annuals like larkspur, sweet peas and calendulas.
    • When dry, rake your lawn vigorously to remove thatch, repair damage with weed-free topsoil. Add grass seed to bare spots. Keep moist.
    • Fertilize your lawn with slow-release high nitrogen (the first of the 3 numbers) fertilizer. Slow release urea costs more, but it’s worth it.
    • Apply crabgrass pre-emergence herbicide to your lawn, if required.
    • When spring finally comes, plant trees, shrubs, perennials and biennials in your garden. No need to wait until May 24th for perennials, that’s for annuals. It may be the first week in June before you can get frost tender annuals into the ground.
    • Re-fill your pots and planters with compost. Put empty plastic bottles with tops at the bottom of large pots. You will need less soil and they will be lighter to move. Add slow release plant food to the top 4 inches.
    • Plant frost-resistant pansies NOW for a little spring colour.

    President's Message
    Caroline Bacher

Welcome to March and the hopes of an early Spring! Apparently, Wiarton Willie predicted an early Spring. We shall see!

March and April are National Probus Months. What better way to celebrate than to welcome our new members. They will be wearing a name badge with a pink smiley face sticker, so please say “hello” when you see them at our meetings and make them feel welcome. I thank Vicki and Terry Kellar along with Pam Weaver for their hard work in registering our new members and for organizing our new directory for this year. We wish Jim Scott, Past Treasurer, a happy and relaxing “retirement” from our Management Committee. He has deserved his Life Membership, presented to him at our February AGM, for his many years of dedicated service to our club.

There are a few Business items that I want to bring to your attention.

Your Management Committee is working hard behind the scenes to keep the club running smoothly. We are in search of an Assistant Treasurer so if you are so inclined please contact the Treasurer, Kathy Eagleson. An accounting background is an asset. You will find the names and contact information of all members of the Management Committee at the front of the new directory.

If you have a Community Announcement to make, please e-mail it to Martin Buscher a few days before our General Meeting so that he can familiarize himself with the content. I encourage you to take a look at our Operating Policies document found on our website under Club Rules. These explain how our club operates within the Constitution guidelines, specifically item #4.

We are trying to reduce garbage at our general meetings and in so doing will dispense with using creamers and sugars provided with our coffee. We will provide milk, cream and sugar in containers for your use at future meetings. Thank you for bringing a small reusable mug for your coffee, tea or water.

I look forward to a busy and exciting year as your President. There are many excursions and events for you to enjoy in our club. Our social convenor, Stella Zahradnik, is busy organizing these and is always happy to receive new ideas. I hope that you will come to the Activity Fair in April to sign up for some of the great activities that are offered by our many coordinators. Let’s take this opportunity to meet new people and enjoy fellowship!

Please note that the revised date for the next General Meeting is Tuesday, March 31st. This meeting has now been canceled out of concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus.

    Life Membership for Jim Scott

Jim Scott has retired from being our treasurer, after more years than he would care to admit! During his tenure Jim was dedicated, hard working, sincere, and honest. He performed what had to be done, quickly. He always made himself available to answer any queries that needed to be resolved. In recognition of his great contribution, he was presented with a Life Membership at our February 25th AGM.

    Our speaker on March 31
    Tom Bell - Cyclist

Tom Bell, Cyclist, age 66 from Collingwood, is our speaker for March, who cycled across Africa to support Hospice Georgian Triangle.  Tom Bell undertook the tremendous 13,500 km bicycle ride last year, the length of South America from Cartagena, to Ushuala, Argentina, to raise awareness and encourage donations to Hospice Georgian Triangle.  His efforts were hugely successful, and raised $21,300.00 for the Hospice.

And if this story wasn't amazing enough, Tom did another bicycle ride in January 2019, this time through Africa.  For his second cross continental cycling journey, on his own two wheels he traversed another 11,220 km from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa in support of Hospice Georgian Triangle.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Activities Fair!

    Annual Bocce Tourney in Jeopardy

After 10 years doing an amazing job organizing the Bocce Tourney event at our annual summer picnic in July, Ken Kelley has decided to take a well-deserved break. This activity sees over 64 club members annually participate in this fun event. A picnic without bocce just wouldn’t be the same. To keep this event going, we need a person or group to take the reins and plan this year’s tourney. Ken has graciously offered to assist if help is needed. Please contact Stella Zahradnik, if you are interested in keeping the bocce tourney alive in 2020.

    Save the Planet!

Remember to bring your own mug for coffee/tea break! Let’s reduce the number of unrecyclable paper cups used at the meetings.

A new website is coming soon!
    Martin Buscher

Our Management Committee has agreed to invest in a new website that should help our volunteers reduce the amount of time they have been spending on clerical work. There is not much fun in tens of hours of printing and mailing membership notifications or doing similar jobs. Instead, we shall move such tasks to an automated system: for instance, we will pay our membership fees online with a credit card. The new website will look a little different, but you should quickly find how similar it actually is to what we currently have. We will get a new members-only section where we will be able to make restricted information available, such as a lookup of our membership directory.

    Help Wanted

The Management Committee is searching for an Assistant Treasurer. If you have an accounting background and are looking for a volunteer opportunity we would like to hear from you! Please contact the Treasurer, Kathy Eagleson. Thank you!

Things to do in your garden each month taken from the Ontario Master Gardener Calendar by John Hethrington, Past President, Master Gardeners of Ontario. For more information call 519-599-5846.

    March 2020:

    • Start tuberous begonias and caladiums and bring them back to life in pots using damp peat moss.
    • Start brassicas (cabbage family) and hardy annual seeds for April-May planting in your garden.
    • Start tomatoes, lettuce and other fast-growing seeds late March, or early April this year.
    • Order summer flowering bulbs. Try www.botanus.com for interesting high-quality bulbs.
    • Get your “To-Do” list for this spring and summer into your computer so you can’t say you lost it.
    • Spread triple 19 fertilizer on the snow on your flower beds and shrub borders before it goes. It’s available at the Markdale Co-Op on Hwy 10 south of Markdale. Ask for our 599 10% discount from the regular price. Call 1-519-986-2031.
    • Check and repair gardening tools. Find them first. Sharpen spades, shovels, etc. Wipe down wooden handles with boiled linseed oil. Paint the handles of small hand tools like trowels with red or yellow fluorescent enamel, so you won’t lose them so often.
    • Apply combination dormant spray to fruit trees and pest-prone shrubs when non-freezing weather permits. Especially good against scale.
    • Start forcing branches of spring-flowering shrubs like Forsythia, and lily-of-the-valley root pips after buds start to swell, later in the month.
    • Prune summer-flowering shrubs and vines when the snow has disappeared.
    • When the snow has gone, and the frost disappears, loosen up packed winter mulch and push perennials back into the soil that have been heaved out of place by the frost.
    • Plan to add a few native berry plants and shrubs that will attract the birds this summer.
    • Visit local nursery greenhouses to smell the coming spring.
    • Check dates for annual garden shows like Canada Blooms, Mar 13 - 22 2020, co-locating with the National Home Show at the Enercare Centre in the CNE grounds. Tickets Reg. $20, Seniors $17, Early Bird on-line to Mar 7, Regular $17, Sr only $14 www.candablooms.com.
    • REMEMBER
      • Paul Zammit is coming back to the Community Centre in Thornbury for our April Meeting, Thursday April 9 @ 7 pm to talk about perennials. It’s a joint 599 Garden Club /Probus Club presentation. Guests welcome for $10. Get tickets at the March Meeting.
