Mahjongg is a game of Chinese origin, somewhat similar to the Western card game "rummy". It is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is usually played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuffled, die are cast, and rituals involving the allocation of tiles and then the exchange of tiles begin. The first person to match a hand of 14 tiles and thus "call mahjongg" ends the game, whereupon tiles are scored and a winner is declared. There is an Amercian version which uses the National Mahjongg League’s yearly issued playing cards. These cards are available by mail each year. Members will need to purchase the new 2024 game card this year for $20 CDN. Each card has basic instructions for playing the game as well as the year’s approved “Hands”. The game can be played for points and/or money. Games usually last 2 hours. We need a minimum of 4 players, and can have groups of four per table. We are currently meeting on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. The host provides a table and chairs. A small refreshment can be provided if the group agrees. |
