New in 2023: This a potential new group depending on the interest shown at Activity Fair and online sign-ups.

Mahjongg is a game of Chinese origin, somewhat similar to the Western card game "rummy". It is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is usually played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuffled, die are cast, and rituals involving the allocation of tiles and then the exchange of tiles begin. The first person to match a hand of 14 tiles and thus "call mahjongg" ends the game, whereupon tiles are scored and a winner is declared.

There is an Amercian version which uses the National Mahjongg League’s yearly issued playing cards. These cards are available by mail each year (approx $10 US). For the start of this group, 2022 cards for the participants can be provided. Each card has basic instructions for playing the game as well as the year’s approved “Hands”. The game can be played for points and/or money but it is not suggested to do so at the beginning.

Games usually last 2 hours. We need a minimum of 4 players, and can have groups of four per table. Time and day of week will be decided by the group.

The host would provide table and chairs. A small refreshment can be provided if the group decides. Initially, it is suggested the group meets once a week until members are more confident in their play. Then it could become twice monthly if the group prefers.
