Beaver Valley Probus Club

Canoeing & Kayaking

Meet Day:  Every other Wednesday, May-Sept
 Location:  As per schedule
Time:  10:00 am, subject to change
 Status:  Planning to restart
Coordinators:   Kirby Philp / Lucie Desjardins

Welcome to the Canoeing and Kayaking Activity Group:

Our goal is to paddle every other Wednesday, weather permitting, starting late May until the end of September. Most of our paddles will be within approximately 60 minutes from Thornbury. As the season progresses, we will evaluate interest in exploring new locations farther away. We plan to have outings launched from Christie Beach, Beaver River at Epping, Lora Bay, Lake Eugenia, Rankin River / Isaac Lake area and more!

This is a “casual” level of Kayaking and Canoeing. The water we tackle is quite easy to paddle and the outings are between 1-1/2 to 2 hours in length. If forecasted conditions aren’t suitable for our paddle day, we may either go to an alternate location or reschedule within that week. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, a hat and to bring water for your outing.

A rolling two months schedule will posted on this webpage (see below) and updated regularly. Paddlers will be sent a notification email the week before with directions/details and a link to register. For our group registration is required for each person as per provincial regulations, but we also would like to know the number of boats. The registration form will ask you to indicate if you are sharing a boat and for the name of member sharing with you.  A reminder email will be sent out the day before to confirmed registrants.

Space will be limited to 4 boats per leader. We currently have two leaders (Kirby & Lucie) and would appreciate any volunteer to co-lead, which would give us the ability to expand the group. Total group size will need to respect the latest provincial Covid-19 guidelines. Physical distancing (2 m) will also need to be adhered to at all times and masks required when not on the water.

Carts with wheels are available at Canadian Tire, MEC or on-line for approximately $100. We’ve been using them for years and find them handy and very easy to use. If you don’t own a canoe/kayak, there are rental options with reasonable prices available at: (Free Spirit Tours in Heathcote. Tel: 519-599-2268). Those people who need to rent should call well in advance to ensure availability. We would advise picking up your rental the night before. You will need an inexpensive roof top transport kit (available at Canadian Tire).

Ontario Transportation Safety Regulations for canoes and kayaks:

  • All paddlers must have a PFD (for our Group we require PFD's to be worn at all times when on the water)
  • Sound signaling device (pea less whistle)
  • Buoyant throw line (15 m long) Bailer (750 ml min) or hand pump

Note: The Marine Safety Kit available at Canadian Tire would have all the above items except the PFD

See you on the water !!!
