BackRoads Cycling #8 (July 09, 2026)

Please note the start time is 9:00 am.

This is a "Sid's Cottage Ride!" Approx 28km.

We will leave the cottage turning left onto Side Rd.#22. Turning left @ the stop sign onto 7th Line. Cross Hwy #26. Continue on 7th Line turning right onto Cnty Rd #12. Go straight thru onto the 16th Side Rd. Turn left onto 11th Line (Sydenham Twnship Rd). Watch for potholes!

Turn left onto 10th Side Rd (Derry Rd). Continue to #12 and turn left. Cross Hwy #26 again and turn right onto Side Rd #22. Turn right at the bottom of the road onto Lakeshore N. returning to the cottage. A rather short ride, only 28km but plenty of rolling hills.

Anyone wishing a longer ride can continue north on #112 to the Irish Mountain Challenge & the Tank Range Rd returning via Side Rd #22 back to the cottage.

After the ride you can cool off with a swim, simply wet your feet in the water or you may choose to just sit in the shade on the beach and enjoy the view.

Hiking down a notch #8 (July 09, 2026)

Nipissing Ridge Trail is a lovely trail just south of the Georgian trail and west of Blue Mountain Road. It follows a stream, winding through a forest area. It is relatively flat, with a few inclines and declines. The path is well trodden and very popular. Many of you would have done this trail with the snowshoe group; it is one of my favourite local trails. Time: about 1- 1.5 hour

Hike leaders: Ilene and Louis

Hike #11 (July 15, 2026)

Note this is a Wednesday hike 9:30 start

Vicki K will lead this hike.

We will see lovely views over Beaver Valley, ravines, a flowerpot and the headwaters of Indian Brook where the water breaks free from the rock, joins the stream, and tumbles over dolostone ledges on its way to Georgian Bay. We will also pass the E.C. Carr Astronomical Observatory (RASC). The mainly forested loop is formed with the side trail and the main Bruce trail. With all the milkweed in the meadow area there are normally lots of monarch butterflies.

This is an easy 4 km hike, but is rated moderate due to several uneven, rocky ascents/descents, including one long ascent. Hike time is approx 1.5 hours.

Please carpool as the parking is very limited. Click on the red word ‘Registrants’ to see who is attending.

We will meet at the end of 6th Line, north of Grey Rd 119, west of Banks.

Please bring water, bug spray and hiking poles.

Reminders and cancellations are only sent to those who register so please register if joining us in order to receive any changes or cancellations.

Rocklyn Creek Hike & Lunch (July 22, 2026)

This hike is on a Wednesday at 9AM: Rain or Shine. I have made a reservation at the Inn at the Falls, at Walter's Falls for lunch (optional). Please advise me by return email if you are joining me.

We are very lucky to have Beth Gilhespy lead us on this hike! Beth is well known for her Bruce Trail Conservancy work and is currently the CEO of the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy. We are looking forward to her sharing some of her knowledge of the area and the geological strata. In addition she has promised to bring along some of her books about this area and the trails, for sale after the hike.($37). I hope we have a very good turnout for this special hike.

As always, please ensure you have the physical ability to handle the length, difficulty and pace. Reminders and cancellations are only sent to those who register so please register if joining us in order to receive any changes or cancellations. As this is a limited number hike please cancel if you can't make it.

This hike is at the beginning of the Sydenham section of the Bruce Trail. It's a delightful walk that starts at, and then passes through, two historic communities. In addition to signs of settler history there are beautiful deep forests and rocky outcrops. The final stretch follows a sparkling tributary of the Rocklyn Creek as it tumbles down a washboard of Manitoulin Dolostone layers. The terrain is rocky but not terribly difficult. No scrambling or big hills but regular ups and downs.

The length is 7.4 kms. Aprox. 3.5 hrs with many stops to appreciate the terrain. We will need a few volunteers to drive us from the parking area to the start at Blantyre.

Bruce Trail Map 28.

Due to the hike length bringing a snack and water is highly recommended!

Hiking poles and boots, plus bug spray are also recommended.

Meeting spot details will be sent via the Registration Confirmation and Reminder emails.
