Recreational Cycling #13 (August 17, 2026)

This will be an easy "keyhole" cycling route including the Georgian Trail, Meaford Cemetery, Meaford Harbour, Beautiful Joe Park, and other parts of Meaford. We will begin and end at the Lora Bay Golf Club. Participants are welcome to join us in the golf club dining room afterwards for coffee and/or lunch. The total distance will be about 20 km with one small-to-medium-sized hill.

Bike Trail Details: This ride is really at the top of Blue Mountain. We will use # 119 and 3rd line, Sideroad 12, Fourth Line, # 19, Sixth Line, 5th Line, 18th Sideroad, 4th Line (again) and back on #119 to our parking area at 15th Sideroad. This ride is a big square at the top of the Escarpment and it is on a mix of gravel and paved roads but all quiet and paved roads with a bike path marked. Lots of rolling hills!

Based on the full slate of golfers we have had the last few weeks, we have booked five starting times for up to 20 players at Tomahawk next Tuesday, Aug. 18th.

We have tee times beginning at 9:10, going through to 9:50 AM. Please let me know if you need an earlier or later tee off time and we will try to accommodate you. As always, if the roster is full when you try to register, please add your name to the Wait List and we will get you out if anyone cancels.

Nordic Pole Walking (August 18, 2026)

The Pole Walking group will meet at the far side of the the Little River Park for a 9:30AM start on Tuesday August 18 .

The Little River Park (beach) is by the pier in Thornbury at the end of Elma St N. If you drive down Bruce St N past the trestle bridge and down the hill you will see the yachts and then the pier.

If you have a TBM parking pass you can park in the lot by the beach/pier. If not you can park on Elma St.

This hike is on a Wednesday at 10am.: Please arrive 10 minutes prior Hike Leader: Vicki

Please confirm in advance with Vicki if you are staying for (a great) lunch or a beverage.

Description: This is a lovely loop which follows the river, and loops around forested areas and includes packed dirt trails (lots of roots) two long up and down sections, with rocky or muddy footing, other ups and downs, plus rocky areas including a long descent.

Difficulty and Duration: Approx 5 kms considered moderately difficult, with several rocky areas. The pace will be medium. Approx time 1.5-2 hrs

Please bring water, bug spray and hiking poles.

Starting point & Parking: The Falls Inn & Spa, 140 Front St, Walters Falls

Welcome to Cocktails and Nibblies!

You are invited to participate in our outdoor cocktail events from 4 to 6:00 pm. Let's hope for good weather. If we need to cancel an email will go out a couple of hours before the event. (Look for a last minute email as the rain/ weather can change just before 4 pm).

Remember to Bring an appetizer, ready and serving utensils of your choice to share with others. (Enough for aprox. 8 people). You will also need to bring your own beverage, and all utensils, (cutlery, glasses, plates etc). Let's make is easy for the hosts by taking your dirty dishes and garbage

Location: Slabtown to Kimberley Return -Approx 40km

Parking is available @ Slabtown parking area on Grey Rd #13 across from the landfill site.

Turn right onto Grey Rd #13. We will be riding all the way to Kimberley on Grey Rd #13. There is a paved bike lane for much of this ride. Coffee /Tea break @ the new Kimberley Cafe. It opens early. We will simply reverse the route for the return ride. Approx 40km. Refer to mapmyride

This hike starts at the south parking lot in the Kolapore Uplands and includes MNR land. It is primarily hard packed dirt trails, with a few rocky areas, through continuous forest, and opportunities to spot rare ferns. The level of difficulty is easy. Pace: moderate

This hike has 3 loops; we will do 2 of the loops. ( 4.6 km, approx. 1.5 hrs.)

The start is the new paved parking lot a couple kms south of the Kolapore Church. Complete directions on the confirmation email.

Kemble Loop ... 10 AM start to allow for travel

Meeting Place: Intersection of Grey Road # 1 and Kemble Rock Road, parking lot of the Kemble Women's Institute lookout North of OS.

Bike Trail Details: This ride is going from the area of Kemble and up to Big Bay with the return route being Grey Road # 1 along the Bay. It is beautiful scenery and there are some hills and gravel, the effort is well worth it but getting closer to the Fall we are all in shape after many rides.

Please remember to bring your helmet, contact information card, put on sunscreen and bring water or other beverage of your choice.

Hike #16 Fox Ridge Road to Old Baldy (August 26, 2026)

This hike is on a Wednesday at 9:30am: Please arrive 10 minutes prior Hike Leader: Vicki K

Description: We will park at Old Baldy then shuttle to Fox Ridge Road to begin this challenging trail. This is an old favourite of mine.

Following along the base of the escarpment we will traverse some boggy areas in a very densely forested & ferned section with lots of rocks to climb down, up and over. We eventually climb a cleft in the rock face to reach the ridgetop.

Skirting the cliff we will pass a sign indicating the midpoint of the Bruce Trail and several lookout points. Back at the parking area we will hike in to the Old Baldy Lookout and loop on a side trail to return to the cars.

Difficulty and Duration: Approx 6.5 kms considered difficult with some moderate to easy areas, and Many ups and downs. The pace will be medium. Approx time 2+ hrs

It is particularly important for this hike to ensure you have appropriate physical ability, balance and endurance. Please bring water, bug spray and hiking poles.

Car pooling is always recommended. Please check the registrant list and make arrangements with fellow hikers.

Back Roads Cycling #15 (August 27, 2026)

Location: Thornbury / Clarksburg Area Approx 30km

We will begin to ride from the Community Centre parking lot in Thornbury. Turn left onto Alfred St. Right onto Bruce St. riding through Clarksburg onto Marsh St. as it becomes Grey Rd #13. Turning left onto 10th Line. Take the tenth Line to Side Rd #21 and turn left. Ride up to Victoria Corners. Turn left onto Grey Rd #2 heading down to the Firehall/ OPP station. Turn left onto Clark St. Uneven pavement sadly. Be careful! Cross Marsh St. and head over the 1-lane bridge in Clarksburg and continue past the orchards riding on Side Rd #30. Turn right onto Blue Mnt/Euphrasia Townline. Turn right @ the 4-way stop sign onto Side Rd #33.(away from Frogs Hollow). New pavement. Slow down & look for the next right turn. It comes up quickly and may surprise you. Turning right onto Napier St. Take Napier to Bruce St. and turn left. Coffee/ Tea break @ the Thornbury Bakery/ Cafe. Returning to the BVCC parking lot by turning right onto Alfred St. Approx 30km with some hills.

Singhampton Sculpture Forest (Wire Bird Making) (August 27, 2026)

Our PROBUS Club has arranged a new event at the Singhampton Sculpture Forest.

You will work with an artist on-site to create a wire sculpture bird, which will be mounted on a rock and perfect to take home to your garden.

After, take a self-guided walk through a serene three-acre estate of gardens and forest with large, eclectic art installations, studios and more.

You are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy it in the gardens.

We would suggest a hat and bug spray for the gardens and forest.

Unfortunately, this location is not accessible for those with mobility concerns.

We are limited to 12 registrants for the sculpture making, so please sign up quickly to avoid disappointment. You are welcome to come just for the garden and forest walk.

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is only required if you plan to make a sculpture. Please do NOT register if you are only interested in the garden and forest walk. (Donations are appreciated on-site in this case)

This is a forested trail, just off the Georgian Trail and 11th line in Collingwood. It consists of wetlands, cedar forest, poplars and open areas. We will have amazing views of the ski hills.

It is an easy, hike with a few loops to choose from. It is a multiuse trail, so we may encounter a cyclist. Time: 1 1/2 hr. , moderate pace.

Again many thanks to Chris and Dave for hosting our July picnic. It was a lovely evening and an enjoyable time for all.

Hazel and Martin have offered to host our August event in their lovely back yard resting on the banks of the Beaver River. We’ll look forward to another lovely summer evening. However, just in case, Aug. 28th will be our backup date.

As usual for our picnics you are asked to bring a ready to serve food item of your choice sufficiently generous to provide 8 servings. This will be a traditional pot luck event.

As well we would ask that you bring dishes, glasses, utensils for your own use and your beverage of choice.

This two-night bike trip to Welland is planned for after Labour Day and is open to members of the E- Bike and Explorators Activity Group. We will be staying at the Best Western Rose City Suites, conveniently located just steps from the Welland Canal recreational trail.

The hotel is bike-friendly and offers a secure storage room for bicycles; guests also have the option of bringing their bikes into their rooms. A complimentary breakfast is included each morning.

Participation is limited to 30 riders. If the trip fills up, please add your name to the waitlist. Single participants who would like to share a room are welcome, and we will do our best to arrange suitable roommate matches.

Join us for an 8-day scenic cycling tour along Quebec’s famous Petit Train du Nord, with charming villages, restaurants, microbreweries, and beaches along the way. We will follow Bayshore Road along the Bay, head to the upper bench on SR 18 and through Annan on CR 15 to Tom Thomson Lane to Leith then back to Hibou Conservation area and yes there are both hills up and down and some Gravel

Topic: Cyber Security for Seniors

Angela Yenssen is a lawyer at Grey-Bruce Community Legal Clinic. She runs the elder law project in seven counties in rural southwestern Ontario funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario. She gives presentations about legal issues that arise as people age. She also does legal work, such as writing wills.

During this meeting, Angela Yenssen will present the major strategies used by fraudsters to scam people out of money and real estate and will offer a toolkit to help you protect yourselves from fraud.

Meaford International Film Festival 2026 (September 25, 2026)

This year we are going to the Meaford International Film Festival, and hope that you can join us.

We will be viewing the film Still Mine.

Based on true events and laced with wry humour, Still Mine is a heartfelt love story about an 89-year-old New Brunswicker who comes up against the system when he sets out to build a more suitable house for his wife.

We will have an optional pre show brunch at The Eggcitement Bistro, at 11:30. Please indicate when you register if you will be coming for the brunch as well, so that we can make the appropriate reservation. The cost of brunch is extra, paid at the time, and is NOT included in the registration fee.

Details: We will have a mystery ride, well not so much a mystery as we did it last year. After the ride you invited to our house for a end of season gathering, there will be Coffee and treats and we may be able to find some Beer and Wine.

We will provide the snacks and drinks but as it will be Noon when we return from the ride and you may be hungry and wish to bring a lunch to picnic on our deck.

We could talk about the 2027 riding season and next years overnight trip.

Topic: British Home Children—The Almost Forgotten Children

Joan Knighton is a former teacher, nurse and ortho tech and a proud descendant of a British Home Child. She has previously written and published her father's story. In her retirement she loves presenting this important, but often little known, part of Canadian history. She feels that she honours her Dad and all the children each time she presents.

Joan will present the history of the British Child Migrant Scheme, which spanned eight decades. More than 100,000 children of all ages were sent by ship to Canada, where many became indentured farm or domestic workers until the age of 18. She will cover why, how and the outcome of the system that gave us The British Home Children.

Speaker: Karin Euler
Topic: Mission Work in Tanzania

Dr. Karin Euler began her academic journey in 1987, earning a BA in Life Sciences from Queen's University in 1991. She then attended Medical School at the University of Western Ontario, where she was named to the Dean’s List and received an award for her mission work in Angola. She completed her internship at Dalhousie University, with hospital affiliations at Guelph General Hospital (1992–2002), Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (2009–2023), and Grey Bruce Health Services (2007–2023). Dr. Euler is currently employed at the Community Health Caring Refugee Clinic. Since 2010, she has participated in annual medical missions to Tanzania with the Canadian African Community Health Alliance and has supported the Women's Shelter in Collingwood. A Family Doctor since 1992, she has special interests in palliative care, tropical medicine, sickle cell anemia, and mental health.

We are excited to announce the 2027 annual golf tournament! The price includes 18 holes of golf with cart, coffee and muffin to start, followed by a BBQ lunch and prizes after the golf.

The format is "Team scramble - 18 holes".

As with past tournaments, the teams will be assigned by the organizers to balance the teams and encourage meeting new members. We will consider preferred pairs by request only. You are welcome to register a non-member guest for this event!

Lunch options are: chicken on a bun, hamburger or a veggie burger or an egg salad sandwich and a choice of two side dishes: country potato salad, pasta salad, garden salad or Caesar salad.

Welcome and review of rules: 8:40-8:50 AM
All players in carts at 8:40 AM for the welcome

Golf—Shotgun Start: 9:00 AM-2:00 PM

BBQ lunch: 2:00-3:00 PM

Prizes and Wrap up: 3:00-4:00 PM

Registration: Sign-up and payment is online. Member couples can register and pay together using the Add Guest button.

Refund Policy: As with past years, refunds will not be given after payment has been made.

Inclement Weather Policy: Cancellation of the tournament will be considered only if the Shelburne Golf and Country Club officially closes the course to all play. This will be determined using R&A standards for play whereby dangerous weather prevents safe play on the course. Beyond this we will play—rain or shine. If the tournament is cancelled, we will reschedule based on availability of requested rain date.
