Before launching On The Bay in 2004, Jeff played a major role in magazine and newspaper publishing as President of Telemedia Publishing, Publisher of Saturday Night Magazine and Vice President, Marketing, of The Toronto Star and was named one of the ten best marketers in Canada by Marketing Magazine.
On The Bay is a highly respected, journalistically written, lifestyle magazine featuring local foods, beautiful homes and gardens and a wide range of sports and outdoor activities available in Southern Georgian Bay. And when it comes to important local issues, On The Bay pulls no punches, be they articles on the impact of Wind Turbines, Quarries, Water Taking or the challenges to our Healthcare services.
According to three professionally conducted surveys, On The Bay has over 50,000 readers and is the best-read magazine in Southern Georgian Bay.
The award-winning magazine publishes the much acclaimed annual Grassroots Heroes feature in its Winter issue, where readers nominate their local champions for their contribution to Southern Georgian Bay.
Jeff gets involved. He is a former Trustee of the Collingwood Hospital, past Chair of the Collingwood BIA, a past Director of The Georgian Bay Association of the local Big Brothers/Sisters organization. He was a Founding Director of a newly-formed think tank, The Institute of Southern Georgian Bay.
Until recently, Jeff participated in a political panel, called the Wise Guys which was aired on Bayshore Broadcasting’s Collingwood radio station, 97.7 FM and on 560 AM in Owen Sound, and wrote Making Waves editorials for the station on a wide ranging number of subjects both local and national. This ended with his new management role with ZoomerMedia’s Classical 102.9 FM
Jeff has a long history of environmental advocacy. He was President of the Canadian Coalition On Acid Rain, which culminated in the successful signing of the US Clean Air Act. He was a recipient of the highest award from the Federation of Ontario Naturalists for his work on the acid rain issue.
Jeff continues his advocacy in the pages of On The Bay, covering the issues that make or break the beautiful but environmentally fragile Georgian Bay community.
In September, 2017, Moses Znaimer’s multi-media company, ZoomerMedia acquired a controlling interest in On The Bay Inc. The effect of the purchase has merged On The Bay with the new Collingwood-based classical radio station, The New Classical 102.9 FM. Jeff continues as a shareholder of On The Bay and under the new partnership, Jeff remains as Publisher of On The Bay and has taken on new responsibilities as General Manager of Classical 102.9 FM.
Jeff resides in Nottawa, just south of Collingwood and is married to writer Reet McGovern Shearer. Jeff is a competitive tennis player, a keen downhill skier and loves his vintage Sea Ray which he plies on the waters of Southern Georgian Bay.
